How To Email Your List After Ghosting

One of the most common things I hear from people DIY-ing their email marketing is some version of:

“I haven’t emailed my list in like 6 months. I don’t even know what to say now.”

Totally understandable. It happens.

But what gets to me is how often that same person says that same thing again 6 months after that!

If you’re avoiding emailing your list because it’s been so long, this is for you.

First of all, the “right way” to do this is to do it. The “right way” is to quit overthinking it and send an email to your list, reminding them of why they signed up in the first place! Remember: they signed up because they want to hear from you. If they don’t, they’ll unsubscribe.

But there are some wrong ways to do it.

One of the “wrong ways” is to pop back in with a standard sales email after not touching base with the list for 2 months or more. That’s a little offensive. If you’ve got something to sell, start nurturing the list with valuable content a few weeks ahead of the sales pitch.

The other “wrong way” is overexplaining where you’ve been and why you haven’t emailed in so long. It’s just not that serious. Odds are, the people on your list haven’t thought that much about it. It’s completely fine to say something like:

“Hey, remember me? I know it’s been awhile since I sent an email. Life has been life-ing but I’m back and can’t wait to share my [valuable content that delivers a quick win] with you!”

Forgive yourself for dropping off and just get back to it. The biggest mistake I see – and I see it over and over – is overthinking it. You’re smart. You know a lot of stuff that would be helpful, inspiring, entertaining, or interesting to the people who signed up to hear from you. Let ‘em have it!
