Here's Why Your Posts Aren't Getting Engagement (And How You Can Fix It!)
Have you ever created an amazing piece of content for your audience that you couldn’t wait to share on social media? Of course you have.
Have you ever delivered it like this:
“Read my latest blog post!”
“I enjoyed doing this podcast with So-And-So. Click here to listen.”
“Going live today at 2. Don’t miss it!”
(on Twitter) “I posted a photo to Instagram.”
If you’ve ever posted something like this, it’s ok. We’ve all done it. But it’s probably why your blog/podcast/video isn’t getting the engagement you want. We can do better.
It’s 2025, gang. No one has time to wander and wade through internet lands they don’t have the map for.
We’re all scrolling and doing 24 things at once. We shouldn’t have to take time to figure out why you’re asking us to click. Life is literally too short for all that.
Here’s the thing: the human brain is wired for survival. When we read anything at all, we’re asking “What’s in it for me?” We’re wondering if there’s something for us at the end of the road you’re taking us down. Will it be worth our while? We know you’re interested but what do we get?
So how do we fix it? How do we create captions that our people actually want to click on?
We answer their question for them. We answer it before they ask.
Whether it’s Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter or even (ew) Facebook, before you post, imagine your reader asking “What do I get when I click this link?”
Try something like this:
“In my latest blog post, I lay out 26 different ways to repurpose your content.”
“If you’re honest with yourself, you know that at least part of the reason your marriage doesn’t feel good right now is because of you, right? Relationships take two — especially when they’re not working the way we want them to. Click here to find a list of questions to ask yourself about the role you play in your marriage.”
“So-And-So’s podcast always delivers the goods on growth strategies. So naturally I was thrilled when she invited me to join. Listen in as we break down three things you can do right now to grow your business before the end of the day!”
“Y'all have been asking me in the DMs how I sell out my offers using Instagram stories. I’m going live today at 2 to share my planning process — don’t miss it!”
Let’s resolve to launch captions like “Check out my latest video” right into the sun. Let’s get this delicious Kentucky fried content out there to serve our people!
TL;DR
*Create captions that give your reader just enough of a taste of what’s in it for them so they actually want to click.
*Keep their problems and struggles — not just your thoughts — top of mind.
*Don’t ask people to click from one social platform to another. Just don’t. Unless you think it’s such a bomb double x dot compost and it has to stay on that one platform, for whatever reason. When you can reduce the number of clicks, DO IT.
